Unique Engagement Rings

People often ask us for ideas on unique engagement rings and we always follow up with the same question, which is "What exactly do you mean by unique?"

Because what some consider unique or different (especially when it comes to engagement rings) can be quite common for others. It's a matter of personal experience and what you've been exposed to in life.

Yes, snowflakes and fingerprints and eyes might be completely unique, but rings can be as well. And you don’t have to have a completely customized ring where they break the mold after they make it—the world is a big place with so many options for unique engagement rings that there is a good chance you won’t run into your own ring.

In the Spencer family (as in Princess Diana) a sapphire engagement ring is very common, as it is for much of the European aristocracy. (In fact, up until 1477, all engagement rings held colored stones, or none at all.) Diana was indeed a trendsetter, but in fact, her mother, and her grandmother all received sapphire rings for their engagements—common to their family, but still quite unique to the rest of us.

Up until recently, most Europeans have always looked at a variety of gemstones for their engagement rings and never really focused on diamonds, although diamonds have become increasingly popular. We figure this is either due to the influence of American culture or for their desire for unique engagement rings since diamonds were never considered the norm and having one would be fairly unique. We have noticed that some Europeans also wear their engagement and wedding rings on their right hands!

For Americans, a diamond engagement ring is all that we think of so why not consider birthstone or gemstone engagement rings as a viable option for owning something that is quite unique.

The chance to use a colored stone, like an emerald for example, gives you the chance to highlight that center stone with diamond accents, for instance you might have an emerald-cut emerald center stone, with two diamond baguettes on the sides. This will create more than a unique engagement ring—it will create a showstopper!

However, if you're looking for engagement rings that only contain diamonds then you really need to find some with interesting settings. The settings can be contemporary or traditional but they should all have something within the design that makes them extra special and unique. This can be accomplished by using a vintage setting and a new, high-mounted center stone, or the reverse—imagine how gorgeous your grandmother’s old-fashioned European cut diamond would be in an ultra-modern, asymmetrical platinum setting!

We were reviewing some unique engagement rings that were recently bought for some lucky gals and thought we should share our top picks with you.

platinum solitaire tensions set diamond engagement ring   This elegant platinum spiral round diamond solitaire engagement ring is contemporary and really unique. It is shown here with a round .32 carat E SI2 and would look good on any type of finger because of the tapered platinum band. We love the way the diamond appears to be floating.

marquise cut diamond engagement ring   This 18 K gold marquise cut .32 carat D VS1 diamond engagement ring is whimsical and beautiful. It's a little vintage inspired yet still has a very modern feel with both bezel and pave settings. Although it can come with any shape of center diamond, the marquise cut is great for elongating the finger.

In the end, there are basically only three components to an engagement ring—the metal, the setting, and the gemstones. So unique engagement rings need to be unique in one of these three ways, or even all of the above.

Be resourceful—you might find the right jeweler, one who will "tear up" one or more rings and piece together just the ring you have dreamed of. It's okay to throw tradition to the wind, just make sure you end up with a ring you will treasure forever.  For more info on how these components work together check out our page on unusual engagement rings.

All of these rings are great options because they're elegant and beautiful and most importantly, timeless. Unique engagement rings are for independent thinkers and are as unique as the women who wear them. Be bold, be beautiful—and be you.
