Turquoise Rings & Engagement Rings

Turquoise rings are beautiful and have a summery quality about them. They look amazing on tanned skin and make wonderfully unique engagement rings.

Turquoise is the birthstone of December however in 2002 Tanzanite was officially added as an alternate so December babies now have two choices to go with.

turquoise ring gemstone

Turquoise is likely the best known opaque gemstone with a long history dating back to 3000 B.C. It has always been thought of as the gemstone of good fortune or a talisman, which are great virtues for a turquoise ring especially if it's for an engagement.

Turquoise can range from a rich blue to a deep green with every conceivable variation in between. It's the copper component within the stone that makes it blue, while iron in the stone makes it greener.

So depending on where the stone is from and the concentration of these particular elements within the rock formations will have a direct effect on the stone's color.

Color Variations Sky Blue, Blue, Blue-Green, Grey Green
Hardness (Mohs scale 1-10) 6
Luster Waxy

Turquoise can look formal or informal depending on the setting. We find that a turquoise ring set in yellow gold has a much more formal look. So if you're thinking about a turquoise engagement ring we recommend going with yellow gold.

White gold and silver are your other options, as platinum is rarely used with turquoise and the end result of all the white metal settings when combined with December's gemstone is a more casual/sporty look.

Like the opal, turquoise is not very hard and only rates a 6 at best on the Mohs scale. You need to keep that in mind when looking at how the stone is set especially for an engagement ring that is likely to be worn everyday.

The setting should protect the stone by covering any exposed corners with a metal prong or some form of bezel setting,  or by 'cushioning' the stone with a surround of metal or other gemstones. This will help prevent any nicks and scratches and generally protect the stone from damage.

Although turquoise is rich in color and feel, in comparison to other gemstones it is inexpensive. A turquoise ring is a great inexpensive alternative to a traditional engagement ring especially for a December girl.
