There are many different types of engagement announcement cards, ranging from professionally printed cards that look similar to wedding invitations to do-it-yourself versions that are fun and crafted by the bride and groom.
It all depends on how formal you'd like to be and what your personal style is.
If you're going the traditional formal route, contact a printer and ask them their advice.
Traditional announcements will almost always be dark lettering printed on ivory or white card stock.
Regardless of what type of announcement you plan to have (formal, fun, casual or traditional) when talking with the printer you'll need to consider the weight of your paper/card stock, the type of lettering (embossed or flat), the color and font to use, and if you want to include any pictures or images.
If professionally printed cards aren't in your budget, many stationery stores offer a great selection of cards, both with something printed on them and also blank cards that you can hand write or print out yourself.
Either way, you want to make sure that the card stock is heavy and not flimsy. A thin card can sometimes feel a little cheap so don't just look at the design, hold it in your hands and see how it feels.
Keep in mind that announcement cards should only be sent to those who will be invited to the wedding and should also reflect how formal or casual your wedding will be.
In other words, if you're going to have a very formal and traditional wedding, your engagement announcement cards should be formal and traditional too. The same is true if you're planning a more casual affair.
The style of wedding you intend to have should guide you through choosing the format and style of announcement or save-the-date cards, as well as the wording. Formal and traditional weddings should have formal and traditional wording for both wedding invitations and engagement announcements. A consistent tone throughout sets the stage for the upcoming nuptials.
If you're not sure what to write, you can check out our samples of engagement announcement wording and our pages on engagement announcement verses if you'd like to include a few words beyond the announcement itself.
Engagement announcement cards can serve multiple purposes. They can be used to simply announce your engagement, but they can also double as an invitation for an engagement party or a save-the-date card.
For an engagement party invitation simply add a few lines after the announcement itself, stating the date and time of the party along with RSVP info. And if you already know your wedding date, include it and add a line about saving the date!
Engagement announcement cards add a special touch and truly celebrate your upcoming union. Whether professionally printed or created at home, they are a great way to get the word out to those closest to you.
Making your engagement and marriage special is all about the details, the things we don't normally do in our daily lives—so make the effort and take the time to send out an announcement—for years to come, you'll be so very glad you did!
