Discount Engagement Rings
Getting More Bling For Your Engagement Ring Buck!

People often ask us about discount engagement rings—where to find them, what to look for, and how to make sure you're not being taken for a ride.

Getting a discount is always a good thing but only when the savings are real.

Some retailers inflate the original price of an engagement ring so that they can then offer a discount to make it look like you're getting a great deal.

In order to know whether or not you're getting a good deal you need to do a little homework.

For diamond engagement rings, most of the cost comes from the diamond itself so you need to have some understanding of what a particular diamond should cost which is really easy and fun to do.

Go online and research the cost of various diamonds by grade, color, clarity and carat (we show you how and where to research and buy loose diamonds here). Once you have some understanding of what you can get at what price, you can then figure out if the discount engagement rings you're looking at are in fact discounted or just being marked up to make you think you are getting a good deal. For gemstone engagement rings it's a little trickier because it's hard to find large inventories for comparison.

Wherever you go and whatever you end up buying, especially if the ring costs more than $1000 make sure the stone comes with independent certification.

If you're shopping at your local jewelry store make sure you negotiate. Bricks and mortar jewelry stores (as opposed to online stores) always have room to negotiate the cost of the diamond because their diamonds are usually more expensive than online retailers who are selling worldwide and carry much larger inventories. In the end, discount engagement rings are really about getting a discount on the diamond.

Online retailers on the other hand often have the lowest margins on diamonds because they're competing with all the other online jewelers. So as we've said throughout this site, unless you know someone in the industry who will work to get you the best deal possible, buying an engagement ring online will usually get you the best price and offer you the best discount just by being an online retailer.

In all cases it's worth asking the person you are buying an engagement ring from why they are offering a discount.

Are they having a sale? Is the style of engagement ring you are looking at being discontinued? Are they clearing out inventory? If they respond with "we always offer discounts" or something like that, then that may be a red flag that they are inflating the suggested retail price to make it seem like you're getting a good deal. Stores don't offer discounts unless there is a good business reason for it so buyer beware.

Last time we looked for discount engagement rings we found Amazon to be a great resource and after doing a little research on the cost of particular diamonds found some very good deals. They are definitely worth checking out.

Buying an engagement ring is not something most of us do every day so it's important to do a little research before we start shopping especially when it comes to diamonds. Make sure you check out our page on buying loose diamonds and follow the links on that page to compare and see the various diamond prices available on the market today.

With just a little bit of knowledge you can then be sure that the discount engagement rings that are being offered to you are in fact discounted and not just a marketing tactic to make the sale.
